Lilydale Gas Pipeline
Lilydale, Victoria, Australia
The Lilydale Gas Pipeline Project involved the installation, testing and commissioning of a new DN300 high-pressure gas pipeline via horizontal directional drilling (HDD) and open trenching techniques. Diona were engaged as principle contractor under an Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) scheme to help design, construct and commission the new pipeline. The project also involved construction of a new gas station and upgrade works to existing structures in the network.
The HDD section across the Yarra River was installed utilising a 90t CMS HDD rig and wire line tracking system. The pipe was successfully installed through layers of silty sand, gravel and mudstone and achieved a perfect CP rating with no coating integrity issues.
Diona worked in collaboration with Jemena through the ECI process and construction period to ensure works were completed as safely and efficiently as possible, with no major delays or budget issues.
The project presented a number of high risk elements, which were managed through innovative engineering processes including HDD construction across the Yarra River under strict environmental conditions, pipe installation through flood zones, residential areas, private land and major thoroughfares, gas station construction, and deep excavation for valve pit installations.
